A Student Officer is a student appointed to an official role within the structure of MEDIMUN. Unlike a Delegate, a Student Officer does not represent a country. Instead, they take responsibility for part of the conference itself.
The role of delegate is not categorized under the umbrella of the student officer.
Student Officers hold a wide range of roles, including:
Chairs, who lead committees, manage debate and apply the Rules of Procedure.
Secretariat Members, who coordinate and lead different areas of the conference.
Department Managers, who manage a department or area of conference operations.
Department Members, who work within a department and carry out its responsibilities.
The term Student Officer therefore describes a category of conference roles rather than a specific level of authority.
At MEDIMUN, the work of Student Officers forms part of the wider simulation of the United Nations. The conference not only simulates the work of delegates within committees but also the organizational structure required for the organization to function.
Secretariat Members, Department Managers and Department Members take responsibility for different parts of this organizational structure, while Chairs lead the work of simulated UN committees and bodies.
Some Student Officer roles are also directly involved in the academic side of MUN. Chairs prepare for agenda items, support delegates with committee work, review draft resolutions and amendments, and guide the procedural and substantive progress of debate.
Student Officers can therefore have organizational, procedural, academic, and leadership responsibilities, depending on their position.
