The Secretary-General, or SG, is the highest-ranking Student Officer at MEDIMUN and leads the Secretariat and the conference as a whole.
The Secretary-General is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and functioning of MEDIMUN. While many responsibilities are delegated to other Secretariat Members, Department Managers, Chairs, and departments, the Secretary-General maintains an overview of the entire conference and ensures that its different parts work together effectively.
The Secretary-General leads the wider organizational structure of MEDIMUN.
Their responsibilities include:
leading and coordinating the Secretariat;
overseeing the work of the conference as a whole;
setting priorities and ensuring that preparations remain on track;
coordinating responsibilities between Secretariat Members;
supporting and supervising the work of Deputy Secretaries-General and other senior Student Officers;
resolving issues that affect multiple departments or areas of the conference;
making high-level organizational decisions;
representing the student leadership of MEDIMUN; and
ensuring that the conference operates according to its structure, procedures, and standards.
The Secretary-General does not personally manage every area of the conference. Instead, responsibilities are distributed throughout the Secretariat and wider organizational structure, with the Secretary-General providing overall leadership and coordination.
The Deputy Secretaries-General, or DSGs, work closely with the Secretary-General and take responsibility for major areas of the conference.
Where there are multiple DSGs, responsibilities and departments are divided between them. Each DSG oversees the areas assigned to them, works with the relevant Department Managers, and reports back to the Secretary-General.
This structure allows the Secretary-General to maintain oversight of the entire conference while the DSGs provide more direct supervision and coordination within their respective areas.
The SG and DSGs work together on planning, decision-making, problem-solving, and the coordination of departments throughout the preparation and running of the conference.
The Secretary-General works particularly closely with the President of the General Assembly, or PGA, on the academic and procedural direction of MEDIMUN.
While the Secretary-General leads the conference as a whole, the PGA has a more direct role in overseeing committees, Chairs, procedure, and the academic flow of the conference.
The SG and PGA coordinate on matters that affect both the organizational and academic sides of MEDIMUN, including the preparation of committees, support for Chairs, procedural consistency, academic standards, and issues that affect the conference across multiple committees.
Academic Role at MEDIMUN
At many MUN conferences, the Secretary-General is primarily responsible for the organizational and executive side of the conference and has limited involvement in its day-to-day academic work.
At MEDIMUN, the Secretary-General is more directly involved in the academic side of the conference alongside the PGA. The SG and PGA work together on the overall academic direction of MEDIMUN, while the PGA remains more directly involved in committees, Chairs, and procedure.
The Secretary-General leads the Secretariat, whose Members are each responsible for different areas of the conference.
Deputy Secretaries-General and other Secretariat Members oversee specific departments, responsibilities, or academic areas. They report and coordinate with the Secretary-General, allowing the SG to maintain oversight without directly managing the day-to-day work of every department.
The Secretary-General therefore works closely with the Secretariat to make decisions, resolve problems, and ensure that the different parts of MEDIMUN remain coordinated.
At MEDIMUN, the Secretary-General plays an important role in the organizational simulation of the United Nations.
The role is inspired by the Secretary-General of the United Nations and represents the highest level of student leadership within the simulated organization. The MEDIMUN Secretary-General coordinates the broader conference structure much as other Student Officers represent different parts of the organization.
At the same time, the MEDIMUN Secretary-General also has practical responsibilities that come from organizing a real conference. For this reason, the role combines the simulation with real organizational leadership rather than functioning as continuous role-play.
When interacting formally with Delegates, Chairs, and committees, the Secretary-General acts as part of the conference structure and is treated accordingly.
The Secretary-General carries overall student responsibility for MEDIMUN.
This does not mean that every decision must be made by the SG. MEDIMUN operates through delegated responsibilities, departments, and defined reporting lines. The Secretary-General's role is to ensure that this structure functions effectively and that the conference continues to operate as one coordinated organization.
The Secretary-General therefore combines leadership, coordination, decision-making, oversight, academic direction, and representation while providing overall direction to MEDIMUN and its Student Officers.
