Code of Conduct
Last updated: 16 June 2026 · Version 2.0
The Mediterranean Model United Nations (MEDIMUN) is dedicated to providing a professional, safe, inclusive, and educational environment for every participant. This Code of Conduct applies to all Delegates, Student Officers (Chairs and Presidents), Members, Managers, Secretariat, Directors, Senior Directors, and guests, across all conference phases — the workshop, the conference days, the plenary, social and ceremonial events, official transport, and all online spaces operated for the conference. Participation in MEDIMUN constitutes a binding agreement to adhere to these rules.
1. Scope and Core Values
1.1 Who and What This Covers
This Code applies to everyone who participates in or attends MEDIMUN, at all times during the workshop and conference, on and off the debate floor, at the venue and at any associated location, and within every digital space — including MediBook, official chats and groups, and any communication channel created for a current or past MEDIMUN.
1.2 Our Values
MEDIMUN simulates the United Nations. We expect every participant to uphold:
Respect — for every person, regardless of background, role, or viewpoint;
Diplomacy — courteous, constructive engagement, even in disagreement;
Integrity — honesty in debate, original academic work, and fair conduct;
Safety — care for the physical and emotional wellbeing of others, especially minors;
Inclusion — an environment free from discrimination and harassment.
1.3 Relationship to Other Policies
This Code operates alongside our [Terms of Service](/policies/terms), [Privacy Policy](/policies/privacy), [Cookie Policy](/policies/cookies), and [Dress Code](/policies/dress-code). Where a School Director supervises a delegation, they share responsibility for ensuring their students follow this Code.
2. Attendance, Punctuality, and Certification Eligibility
Strict adherence to attendance policies is required to maintain the quorum and academic integrity of the conference.
2.1 Mandatory Presence
All participants must be present for the entirety of the workshop and conference phases for which they are registered.
Delegates and Student Officers must be seated in their assigned committee rooms prior to the commencement of Roll Call at the start of every session.
2.2 Unauthorised Absence and Loss of Certification
The Rule: If a Delegate, Chair, or Manager leaves their assigned committee session or post at any time — even briefly — without explicit verbal or written approval from the Secretariat or Senior Management, they may be disqualified from receiving a Certificate of Participation.
Leaving the room: For a short biological or emergency break, obtain permission from the Head Chair or the assigned Secretariat member in the room.
Leaving the venue: Leaving the conference venue entirely requires approval from a Director.
Late arrivals: Repeated lateness without a valid excuse cleared by a Director will be treated as an unauthorised absence.
2.3 Welfare Exceptions
Nothing in this section requires a participant to remain in a situation where their health or safety is at risk. Genuine medical, welfare, religious-observance, and accessibility needs will always take priority and will not count against certification. Tell a Chair, Secretariat member, Director, or your School Director as soon as practicable.
3. Professionalism, Respect, and Anti-Harassment
MEDIMUN simulates the United Nations; diplomatic courtesy is paramount, and harassment of any kind is met with zero tolerance.
3.1 Non-Discrimination
Discrimination is strictly prohibited in all speech, written text, and action. This includes, without limitation, discrimination based on: religion or belief; sexual orientation or gender identity; sex or gender; national origin, ethnicity, or race; skin colour; disability or mental/physical ability; age; or socioeconomic background.
Note on debate: Delegates represent assigned countries or entities and may voice positions that are not their own. Representing a national position is part of the simulation; using the simulation as cover for genuine personal abuse, slurs, or discriminatory attacks against real people is not, and is a violation of this Code.
3.2 Anti-Harassment and Bullying
MEDIMUN enforces a zero-tolerance policy for harassment, including:
Verbal or physical abuse — racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise offensive comments or actions;
Sexual harassment — unwanted advances, comments, or contact of a sexual nature;
Cyberbullying — harassment via social media, messaging apps, or any digital platform connected to the conference, treated identically to in-person misconduct;
Intimidation — aggressive, threatening, or coercive behaviour toward any delegate, staff member, or volunteer.
3.3 Interaction with Staff and Secretariat
Participants must follow the instructions of the Secretariat, Directors, and security/venue staff at all times. Disrupting committee sessions, arguing with Student Officers over procedural rulings outside of formal points, or harassing staff will result in disciplinary action.
4. Dress Code
Participants must adhere to Western Business Attire for the duration of the workshop and conference. A short summary follows; the complete requirements, including cultural, religious, and accessibility accommodations, are set out in our [Dress Code](/policies/dress-code).
Acceptable: matching suits in dark/neutral colours; collared dress shirts or professional blouses; ties where worn with a suit; knee-length-or-longer professional dresses/skirts; formal closed footwear.
Not acceptable: denim of any colour; sneakers, trainers, or athletic footwear; t-shirts, hoodies, or sportswear; caps or hats (except for religious or cultural observance); and clothing that is revealing or inappropriate for a diplomatic setting.
5. Academic Integrity and Intellectual Property
5.1 Original Work and Plagiarism
Original work: All resolutions, amendments, clauses, and speeches must be the original work of the delegates.
Plagiarism: Copying resolutions from previous conferences, online databases, or other delegates is strictly prohibited.
Pre-written resolutions: Delegates may prepare research and position papers in advance, but may not bring fully pre-written resolutions to the conference. Resolutions must be the product of lobbying and negotiation during the session.
5.2 Responsible Use of AI Tools
Generative AI may be used, where a Chair or Director permits, only as a research and learning aid. Submitting AI-generated text as your own original resolution, clause, or speech, or using AI to bypass the lobbying and drafting process, is a form of academic dishonesty and is treated as plagiarism.
5.3 Protection of Others' Work
Taking photographs or screenshots of another delegate's resolution, clauses, or working papers without their explicit permission is forbidden.
Theft of physical notes or devices is grounds for immediate expulsion.
6. Privacy, Media, and Data Protection
6.1 Official MEDIMUN Recording
MEDIMUN is authorised to take photographs and video and audio recordings, and to livestream parts of the conference, for documentation, educational, promotional, and archival purposes.
6.2 Consent by Participation
By registering for and participating in MEDIMUN, all delegates, chairs, staff, and attendees consent to being photographed, recorded, and livestreamed by MEDIMUN as part of the conference. Such media may be used in official publications, websites, social media, promotional materials, and future communications, in compliance with the GDPR.
Where a participant or, for a minor, their parent/guardian has a specific objection to the use of their image, they may contact info@medimun.org; we will consider reasonable requests, recognising that some incidental capture in wide shots of a live event may be unavoidable.
6.3 Private Recording
Private individuals (including delegates, guests, and external attendees) must obtain explicit consent from the individuals concerned, or from MEDIMUN, before taking, sharing, publishing, tagging, or distributing any photograph or recording made during the conference. Unauthorised recording, sharing, tagging, or publication of personal data or images may constitute a violation of the GDPR and of this Code.
6.4 Data Protection and Platform Conduct
Personal data processed through MediBook is handled in accordance with our [Privacy Policy](/policies/privacy) and is stored within the European Union (primarily on Amazon Web Services infrastructure in Frankfurt, Germany, via our managed database provider). Participants must:
keep their account credentials private and not access another person's account;
not misuse personal data they can see through their role (for example, contact details visible to a Chair or School Director);
not solicit, advertise, or spam within any chat, group, or environment created or operated for a current or past MEDIMUN.
7. Venue, Property, and Safety
7.1 Respect for Facilities
Participants are guests of The English School and any other host venue.
Damage: Any damage to furniture, electronics, or building infrastructure is forbidden. The individual(s) responsible will be held financially liable for repairs or replacement.
Cleanliness: Keep committee rooms and shared spaces clean; dispose of all rubbish appropriately.
7.2 Prohibited Items and Animals
Animals: Delegates may not bring pets or animals to the venue under any circumstances (assistance animals required for accessibility are an exception — arrange these in advance with management).
Dangerous items: Weapons, sharp objects, or any item deemed dangerous by security are strictly prohibited.
7.3 Health, Safety, and Emergencies
Follow all instructions from venue staff and MEDIMUN management in an emergency, and familiarise yourself with exits and assembly points.
Report any accident, injury, or hazard to a Director or Secretariat member immediately.
If you or someone else needs urgent medical help, alert the nearest staff member without delay.
7.4 Accessibility and Accommodations
MEDIMUN is committed to enabling every eligible student to participate. If you have an accessibility, medical, dietary, or other need, please raise it through your School Director or at info@medimun.org in advance so we can make reasonable arrangements.
8. Substance Policy
MEDIMUN is a strictly substance-free educational event.
Alcohol: Possession or consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited for all student participants.
Tobacco and nicotine: The use of cigarettes, cigars, vapes, e-cigarettes, and any other tobacco or nicotine products by delegates during the workshop and conference phases is prohibited.
Illegal drugs: Possession or use of illegal narcotics will result in immediate expulsion and referral to local law enforcement.
9. Reporting, Investigation, and Discipline
9.1 How to Report
If you witness or experience a violation of this Code, report it promptly to: your Committee Chair or Manager, any member of the Secretariat, your Director, a Senior Director, or info@medimun.org. Minors should also feel free to involve their School Director.
9.2 How Reports Are Handled
All reports are taken seriously, investigated thoroughly, and handled with as much confidentiality as is consistent with the safety of those involved and our legal and safeguarding obligations. We will not tolerate retaliation against anyone who reports a concern in good faith. Where a report concerns the safety of a minor, MEDIMUN may involve the relevant School Director, parents/guardians, the host institution, or the authorities.
9.3 Consequences of Violation
Depending on the severity and circumstances, MEDIMUN's management may impose sanctions including, but not limited to:
Verbal warning — a formal caution from a Chair or the Secretariat;
Suspension — temporary removal from a committee session, including loss of voting rights;
Certificate revocation — non-issuance of the Certificate of Participation (mandatory for serious attendance violations);
Expulsion — immediate removal from the current MEDIMUN session;
Future ban — prohibition from attending future MEDIMUN events;
Referral — notification of a School Director, parents/guardians, the host institution, or law enforcement where appropriate.
Sanctions are applied proportionately and at the discretion of MEDIMUN's senior management, whose decision is final.
9.4 Appeals
A participant (or, for a minor, their School Director or parent/guardian) who believes a sanction was applied unfairly may request a review by a Senior Director by contacting info@medimun.org within a reasonable period. The review decision is final.
10. Acknowledgement
By registering for and participating in MEDIMUN, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to abide by this Code of Conduct and all related Policies. School Directors confirm that they have communicated these expectations to the students in their delegation.
